for lance armstrong in terms of his money. i'm not surprised because look, cycling is the dirtiest sport you could possibly imagine in terms of blood doping. and one of the problems is that as recently as the 1980s everything that is illegal now was legal. so everybody that today's cyclists grew up watching, there were blood doping, they were trying to oxygenate their blood. you have your blood removed from your body and put in several large bags and then reinjected into your body. which doesn't really seem like cheating if you think about it. it is your blood but apparently it is both dangerous don't try that at home, kids. also, it is something that helps you breathe which is a good thing in sports, when you have to bike up the side of the pyrenees. >> john: i think that's what the stones did in switzerland back in '72. i'm with you dave. i'm boggled. when you consider the amount of people out there who want to sue lance armstrong for defamation and slander. this admission by armstrong could do more than clear his conscience

it's always about winning for lance armstrong. even the confessions now is about winning, because he wants to rehabilitate the image and compete once again. you can't blame him for that. but again you see it's something that is a plan that has been put together by his team. >> the fact that he was raising a lot of money for cancer and has done a lot of good things for people, was this his justification for his operation, the way his behavior and the way he was competing and cheating and lying? >> again, we have to give him credit that he wanted to help other people but in many ways that becomes a rationalization. we use that as a way to shield ourselves from the cold, hard truth that perhaps we are cold and hard by doing these things that may not be from the heart but to help us as far as the public perception. >> personally, does he need rehabilitation? >> this is a man who i truly believe needs to feel what's inside. i think he has locked out a lot of those emotions, a lot of feelings, brought in his own hype about winning. that

this comes after lance armstrong, which is different. that was true illegal activit activity. but why this guy was so invested in the story and have to continue it even after he knew it was a hoax is just inexplicable to me. >> bret: tucker? >> it's explicable if it's part of publicity campaign designed to gen up publicity prior to winning the heisman. not saying is it but that would make sense considering the sports coverage is not just about the story itself but the back story. not a long jumper but a survivor. she came this far. we learn so much about the lives of the athletes and all of this is designed to make us sympathize with them personally. he spoke about the death of the girlfriend. i don't think we ought to assume it was a woman who supposedly died the same day as his grandmother and that means he sympathetic victim. he could be the victim of the hoax and also a perpetrator. this is checkable but the point is nobody checked it. many sports reporters doesed a latory journalism that doesn't contain checking. it's designed to clobber over the athlete, not journalism.
